I think it is 'aonbheannach' (one horn), similar to srónbheannach (rhino) although my husband used to call it a 'capall draíochta' when telling stories to our daughter, but that was certainly a made-up word; cute though.

A hippo is a water horse in Irish. Comes from Latin I think. I suppose it would have to as we don't have them in Ireland.

Yeah, anyway that's almost a calque of the word "hippopotamus" (is that the English word?)

hippo- = horse, in Old Greek
potamos = river, in Old Greek

dobhar = water, in Irish (but the everyday word is "uisce" of course)
each = horse, in Irish

I think they have just (almost, because it's water in Irish, not river) translated the Greek elements to create that new Irish word.
