Are there any links out there to sites that have free beginner-friendly reading material (stories and so on)?

If you look at Cló IarChonnacht (cic.ie) under "Béal Beo" they have seventeen transcripts of exercepts from books, poetry etc along with the associated audio. You can download or read and listen.

I'm looking specifically for beginners' stuff, though (nursery rhymes and such). At least this go 'round. It's for an article.

That's a good CD, and I'll recommend it as something people can buy. I'm just wondering if there are any reading resources that beginners can use for free on-line. For intermediates, there are things like Beo and Foinse, but are there stories or such on-line that would be of use to very new speakers?

I'm afraid I'm not doing a very good job of explaining what I'm looking for (just looked back over what I'd written, and I really wasn't clear). I'm looking for websites where folks can go and read without having to buy something.

Basically, this article is touting reading as a learning tool. I have plenty of books and such to recommend, and sites where people can order them, and on-line reading resources for intermediates to advanced learners, but I have yet to find on-line resources for beginners.

Years ago Beo had a beginner's serial, but they seem to have discontinued it.

There are all the on-line resources for schools available (such as Scoilnet.ie, Naíonraí srl) and quite a few individual schools have their own sites which include vocabulary pages for the benefit of parents as well as the schoolchildren. I have posted some up from time to time. There are also the usual suggestions such as Liam Ó Maoinlaí (Learn Irish) and various pronunciation presentations on YouTube.
There's Leabhair Labharta (on Scoil net) for example, but Breandán is going to come down on me like a ton of bricks because the pronunciation isn't up to scratch - which is the big problem. For Munster there's always Rahblaí Rabhlaí and the other two books and CDs that come after it, and then there's Futa Fata (they're now on YouTube as well).

Abairleat Beo seems like it's a facebooky sort of thing for gaeilge. Plus though it's got the Oide section.

There are a load of short pieces aimed at learners on the Beo website. The series is called Taisce Focal, written by Róise Ní Bhaoill and Gordon McCoy.

To accompany 'Mac Rí Éireann' - leabhar & DVD (ISBN 978 0 9552271 4 1) retold by Caitríona Hastings and Andrew Whitson, Children's Books Ireland/Leabhair Pháistí Éireann have published an on-line worksheet in Irish (Shadowing Activity Pack 2011).
I would also suggest that you have a look at the presentations of An tSnáthaid Mhór on YouTube such as Ó Chrann go crann and especially AnGreasaiBrogMakingofEnglishsubtitles srl.
