Is there a specific word in Irish for "afghan" (as in small blanket, lap robe, throw)?
GRMA
Nothing for 'afghan' in De Baldy, englishirishdictionary.com, potafocal or focal.ie. However, focal.ie has
'fallaing throscáin' for a throw for furniture -
http://www.focal.ie/Search.aspx?term=throw. I have no idea if that is of any use. My knowledge of such items is limited in any language so until a few minutes ago, I thought Afghan had either to do with the country or a dog!
In fact, if you don't mind, I'll change the title to give it a small 'a' as it is in your post - to prevent people like me thinking geography or canine!
I only knew of the country and the breed of dog, as well, a Shaoirse, but I think it is still meant to be capitalised for the throw, so if you don't mind, I'll just change the 'a' back to upper case.
SOED has:
Quote:
A knitted and sewn woollen blanket or shawl; (in the Indian subcontinent) a quilt, a coarse rug.
I wonder if
filleog or
fillteog (related to
filleadh "kilt" ?) would work for that? Dinneen has
filleog as "a shawl, a mantle, a covering." FGB refers
filleog to
fillteog and has
fillteog as "a wrap".
Going by Bríd's post, another possibility might be
pluidín or
pluideóg "small blanket, wrap".
