Make sure you have the right one i.e the old "Teach Yourself Irish" as that is the one being discussed. The old "Teach Yourself Irish" focuses on the Irish of the Munster sub- dialect of Muscraí in Co. Cork. The new "Teach Yourself Irish" concentrates on the Caighdeán. I believe your preference is Munster Irish? If so have a look at the "Séadna" thread where we are also discussing the work of the Cork- Irish author an t-athair Peadar Ua Laoghaire. Breandán has kindly posted a link to where you can download the older version, including more importanly, where you can download all the sound files, free of charge as it is impossible now to buy the old version new. You can only get the old "TYI" second hand as they only print the new version now. Click on the link below!

You can thank that old fellow Dave that everyone thought was crazy for being mad enough to sit down and do all the hard work for us. Dave actually wrote to the publisher and got confirmation that it was out of publication and not likely to be reprinted.

The course is Munster Irish, particularly the West Muskerry subdialect and has sound files by native Gaeltacht speakers of the dialect.

Dia dhuit a chara,
the copy I have is the 1961 edition with a light-blue cardboard cover, published by the English Universities Press Ltd - on page 22 they give a list of words in the old spelling opposite the same words in the new spelling. Is this the edition you are referring to?

Yep that's the one. When you go into the link, you'll see a big essay and then comments with a debate if you scroll down all the way to the end you'll see the links to download the sound files. You probably wont need to download the book. On the downloadable version there is page with all the mistakes amended. I'm not sure if that's on the original.

I've been slacking off a bit. Didn't get round to lesson 3 till this morning.

Exercise 1: "Tá capall an tsagairt bacach." This is one example of why they should publish an updated edition of this book. How would you say "The priest's car has a flat tyre"? :mrgreen:

I was very slow doing the translation exercises. Got most of them right, but only because I took the time to think about them. If I used these sentences in conversation (without pausing to think), I'd probably make mistakes with most of them. So, more practice needed here.

About casóg: is that word still used in modern Irish, and is it ever used outside of Munster?

I'm not sure whether it's still used on its own, but when you look it up on Focal.ie it's been adapted for some more specific items - casóg chliabhraigh, casóg chomhraic and casóg mharcaíochta (neither of which are referred to as a cassock)

Yes, the word casóg is definitely used in Munster.

According to the people I know, it is the most common word for "coat" (in Múscraí anyway) and I also heard it in Kerry when I went there 5 years ago.
