Not so long ago (tho I can't find it now), I was reading that beoir may have originally not been beer, but a cider-like drink.

Any ideas on this?

Beoir is a Norse loan word, so it probably refers to whichever alcoholic drink the Norse referred to as bjórr.

The Norse used to drink a lot of mead, didn't they? With the recent explosion of craft brewing, I wonder why you can't get a pint of mead these days.
