Having said that, some of my friends pronounce it more like LIE / l'ai, in fact I do myself, depending on who I'm speaking with, just like I do when I hear people say BORE, instead of BOHAR, or SAVRA, instead of SOWRA. I can usually tell if someone is from Bearna, An Spidéal or Carna soon after meeting.
Around here, as little as a mile can change the pronunciation radically, so I amuse myself by following suit. There are many words in Conamara which have different pronunciations, depending on the locality. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is aware of that.
Its easy to recognise where in Conamara someone is from when you have become observative in Irish dialects and learned prononciation.
I can also tell if someone is from Ros Muc and even the Aran islands.
I think they start pronouncing it SAVRA in Ros Muc, but its definitely a 100% from Cill Chiaráin onwards.
You can tell someone is from Cois Fharraige because of the one syllable, for example like you said bóthar would be BORE but once you get to Carraroe and else where it is bóthar, same thing for oíche it would be EE in Cois Fharraige but ee-heh elsewhere.
Its even possible to tell if someone is from Camus
