Is it any wonder the average Irish person is so damaged ?

Only a child in school would ask permission to go to the toilet so like you said -

"An bhfuil cead agam dul amach?"
"An bhfuil cead agam dul ag an leithreas ?"

otherwise you might say -
Cá'il teach an asail?

Where I went to school, 'An bhfuil cead agam dul amach ? was understood by the teacher to mean one wanted to go to the 'restroom'.

'Tóig amach do láimh' was understood by the unfortunate child to mean that he or she had to stretch out a hand to be lashed with a strap !

And that was about the sum total of Irish most kids left school with !

I wasn't questioning that at all. That's what I'd say too.


In Conamara we'd say - Sín amach do láimh.

Ah, I see where the problem is coming from. I didn't mean asking for permission to go, I just meant to say that I had found some ways to _tell_ someone you were going to the toilet in Irish. I've changed the title accordingly.

It is generally considered polite in most societies to let people know why you are suddenly leaving their presence or at least excuse yourself so that people you have been talking to don't follow you over to the bushes, hedge, wall, tree, rest room, etc., to continue the conversation.
