Yes, a few locals sang too, but don't ask me their names. I'm lucky to remember my own name most of the time. Some of the locals didn't even know about the poetry evening, they just came in to Moonies for a pint and ended up joining in with the craic.

Two lads in particular stood out, a singer and a piper who played a few tunes together in the snug. I'd say they were in their mid to late 20s. The singer was a bit shy and kept saying he didn't know the lyrics to any more songs, but after a few shouts of "abair leat" he'd start up singing again.

One of the Scottish girls had an amazing voice, but she sang so quietly you could barely hear her. It's always the most talented people that get self-conscious.

That's very often the case, actually. Really talented people tend to be excruciatingly aware of where they miss perfection, and thus much more self-conscious. It's a shame, really.

I've just been told that the Scottish girl I was talking about was recovering from laryngitis. That explains why she was so quiet. But she sounded great, I'd love to hear her when she's in full health.
