I've been asked a couple of questions by a beginner and, while I'm pretty sure I know the answers, I've never really thought about them, I wan't to be very sure before I corrupt the innocent!

1) When addressing two people by name, do you repeat the vocative particle for each? For example, would you say "A Mháire is a Sheáin, tugaigí dom bhur gcótaí"? My inclination is to say yes.

2) If you're using the form "is as Éirinn dom" to say where you're from, the emphatic form would be "is as Éirinn domsa" rather than "Is as Éirinn mise," yes?

It is yes... because why wouldn't you put the second name in the vocative? You call the 2nd person too...



Yes. But "Is as Éirinn mise" is just as right, it's the emphatic version of "Is as Éirinn mé", which is the same thing as "Is as Éirinn dom(h)".

Thanks! Yes, we know that "is as Éirinn mise" is right too, but since "is as Éirinn dom" was the example, we wanted to be consistent by using the same when giving the emphatic, as this is for complete beginners.

Yes to the second vocative, but I'd be inclined to use tugaigí dom bhur gcóta, since they would normally only be wearing one each.
